...from an April 27, 03 email:

The photo of the old picture hangs at CoCo's where we had lunch. The blades
of the long gone "Old Dutch Mill" can be seen in the left edge.

...the Superior Grill!

...and   other   adventures

Note:
Old Dutch Mill in background on Jericho Tpke, so this diner was on the southeast corner of Rte 110 and the Pike...front of car at far right of photo suggests that this pic was taken late '30s - early '40s...

Question (thought up in a senior moment):  when we were in high school, think I remember a more modern Superior Grill, with a lot of chrome and maroon-colored sides...and was it on this corner (where the Whitman Mall went up), or was it on the diagonally opposite (northwest) corner???

...and a subsequent exchange of emails:

from Allan Johnson 5/1/03:
My dear Senior Jack,
The diner was always on the southeast corner. The northwest corner housed an Oldsmobile dealership for many years; then a discount appliance store, which was razed about 15 years ago for a Staples and a Chase branch.
I don't recognize this "edition" of the diner. The one I started going to when I was 16 - 17 was more modern and had a center entrance "foyer". It was later enlarged to the north side. --Allan

..from me 5/1/03:
My Dear Old Chap,
Wasn't there also a car dealership on the southwest corner--had a gas pump or so cutting the corner at NY & Jericho--(Pace??) --I'll post your email on the subject--J

...from Allan 5/2/03:
Yes, indeed, Jack, there was a Chrysler-Plymouth dealer and a Shell station on that corner if memory serves. I'm not sure that it was Pace - doesn't ring a bell--Allan

...and from Bill Reynolds 5/2/03:
Jack,In our time frame, the Superior Diner was a modern eatery, located on the south-east corner of Rt 110 and Jericho Turnpike. Many of us spent (wasted) time on premise after returning from a night of bowling at Whitman Lanes or watching submarine races at the 110 Drive In ...Bill

...and finally another email from Walter McCarthy:
The comments about the Superior Grill are correct. I remember a more modern version also. Here is an early picture of Pase on the SW corner of Jericho and 110. He was selling Franklin (air cooled) cars at this time and later went on to sell Chrysler.

The 2nd photo (4th picture below)is Leonard's Garage on N.Y. Ave. about across from the South end of the Huntington cemetery. It was a dry cleaners and other things through the years, but I was lucky enough to get this shot when the modern sign was down for repairs about 10 years ago. Never thought the original was still behind it painted on the wall!---

above: at the SW corner of Jericho and 110, looking across Jericho Tpke--this photo probably from the '30s...

below (blowup of left side): Gulf gas (wasn't it Shell later), Fisk tires--cord tires with heavy tubes, no less--Quaker State Oil (at left under ladies restroom sign), and actual high pressure lubes (for $1.25!)

below ( right side blowup): the name (Wm?) Pase at top of Franklin sign, and also Pase sold DeSoto (sign off right side of bldg and reflected in top of window)...so he got into Chrysler after they bought De Soto?...never realized DeSoto was that old!...note the '30s -something cars at end of bldg

...and finally this gem, at 590 NY Ave, between Woodland and Grandview Sts, on the east side, across from the cemetery...

Pierce Arrow??...Wow!!

...note the bricked-up window left side

... and Leonards today, in a 5/15/03 photo by Walter McCarthy...now an antique shop...

note the old Leonards sign still visible behind the Golden Oldies sign...the door has been replaced, the window on left "un-bricked", and the air conditioner removed and the space bricked over...
