California Micro...

3/19/03-from Elaine Staber Steward

In late February, early March, Susie Macfarlane Lanham visited Santa Barbara to attend baby showers
in anticipation of the birth of her third grand child (first child for daughter, Christe). I (Elaine Staber Steward)
was unable to attend the shower, so instead we met for lunch at a point about half way between
Santa Barbara and Pasadena. We had fun catching up on life and talking about the anticipated newcomer
. (Note my “I Voted” sticker – it was California Primary day.)

2/15/04 Annapolis Micro
--Jack Downing

Mary and I had a great lunch with Ron and Bette Montaperto at the Ram's Head (where else?)
Tavern in Annapolis--great conversation and memories--but wouldn't you think that the guy
who does the web site would come away with at least a photo?
Yes, of course I bought my trusty camera, and with the very kind waitress having
put down her tray and hovering, I got the camera out for her--
only to find that the battery was discharged! What a putz!
Of course, the only thing for it is to have another lunch soon, so I can get a photo.
I hope the rest of you learn from this! --Jack

I had to go to the "Huntington Town Hall" yesterday. I was finally able to get into our old gym.
The gym is now the town archives... BUT, the origional floor is still there and you can still see the
basketball court outline. It brought back many memories. I could still see Charlie going up
court with the ball etc. ...By By for now. Jim Murphy

...another micro..from Elaine Staber Steward

In late October, Jean Morrell Neil, George Neil (’55), and I spent 6 days touring
the Four Corners (Pueblo Indian Country) of the Southwest. Here we are at the
Hubbell Trading Post – in business since the early 1800’s. We had a great time
getting caught up on 45 years of news as well as sharing a common interest in
exploring the Southwest.

...on 11/13/03 Allan Johnson emails the recent Long Islander obit on Mike Horan:

This is posted with mike's early photo and a picture of the station in the "File Cabinet'

( from the Class Page click on Time Capsule, then on "File Cabinet",
then on the second drawer labeled "That". Mike's stuff is in
the second folder thereof named " Around Town Then...and Then"

...an 11/10/03 email from Allan Johnson

Bad news from yesterday's Newsday. It's our Jimmy Johnson. The names of his wife and kids square

9/26/03: More from Annapolis!--Jack Downing

On a bright Friday at noon, on the old back patio of the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis,
Ted Mastroianni, Walt Fried, and I grabbed lunch and some great memories--a blast--only problem
was Teddy's hair, of which he has entirely too much--in fact, the same as he had in high school--
This event was planned on short notice (we had to pry Walt off his boat)--Ted came in from DC, Walt
lives a couple of miles south of Annapolis, and I drove the 25 miles up from Calvert County--

We thought that we should do this again soon, maybe with a bit of prior planning, so more of you
might want to come--we also decided that we needed some of the girls there, just like all our high
school parties--

Below, the culprits:

9/15/03: Elaine's West Coast Adventures (Anton looks great!!)

On Sunday, 31 August, in Berkeley, CA, I got together with Anton Lignell. Despite the fact that
we knew each other little while in high school, we talked and talked – he has had a fascinating life!
He said that he felt sufficiently inspired to finally submit his bio to the website. I certainly hope
he does. I have a step-family in Berkeley, so try to get up there from time-to-time.

Here we are in a Berkeley coffee shop. The kids are my step-grandchildren. Cecelia (4) behind Anton’s
right shoulder and Helen (16 mos) in my lap. – elaine
staber

and...

On Sunday, 14 September, Susan Cahn Parker, her husband, Flip, and I attended Carlsbad’s Fiesta del Barrio.
We had time to get caught up on each other’s lives and pictures (Sue’s daughter’s wedding, a couple of trips
for me) since our last get-together over the New Year’s weekend. No pictures of the two of us
– I figure the one I sent in last year is sufficient! - elaine steward

9/12/03--from Jack Downing

Walt Fried and I had a great lunch and conversation today at the Ram's Head Tavern
in Annapolis...Teddy Mastroianni had intended to join us but was called
out of town on business ...we'll reschedule and with a bit more notice
will try to get more of us there --it's always a great time--unfortunately it rained so
we couldn't use the old patio

...from an 8/2003 Allan Johnson email:
We just had a quickly put together sendoff luncheon today for Betty Ann Sammis Michta (moving to Vero Beach,Fla)
attended byBetty Ann, Barbara Conroy Gignon, Sheila, Marie Mattiucci Fusaro,
Jean Osso, Judi Lopman Miranda, and yours truly.
Almost four hours of conversation... (photos from Judi Lopman Miranda)

...from an earlier Allan Johnson email that Jack (flog him) apparently misplaced:
Here's some news of yet another 56er micro-reunion. Today, July 27th, Marcia Specht,
Sue Kurshan Bahari, Sheila Ehlinger, Bobbie Bassler and I got together for a summer outing.
We met this morning at the NassauCounty Museum of Art, saw theBelle Epoque exhibit featuring
the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, etc and then off to Port Washington for lunch and our
ongoing "catch-up" conversations.

It was a great day and we all had a great time. No pictures; nobody wanted to
carry a camera. We just wanted to have a friendly, relaxed get-together. Which we did.

Marcia Gallaty Passes

from an 8/14/03 email of Larry Stillman..."Some bad news. My mom tells me that Marcia Gallaty Applebaum
died this week of breast cancer. She was my first "girl friend". A Rooseveltian and a real nice person."

Note: see also the In Memoriam section of this site--we'll post more detail as it is available

...and an 8/17/03 Email from Marcia's Husband, Bernie
Marcia passed away on August 4, 2003 from complications of pneumonia. It was the second episode since the
beginning of the year. She fought a valiant battle but could not beat the infection this time.

We would have celebrated our 43rd anniversary on the 6th of August. She was a woman of valor that gave me
all these years of happiness plus two beautiful daughters and four grandchildren. She will be missed by everyone.

She was looking forward to her 50th high school reunion and a return to Huntington, which is also my birthplace...
But I moved to Florida in my early childhood and after our marriage have been here ever since.

She was truly a beautiful woman that always had a smile on her face and loved life to the fullest.

Sincerely....Bernie Applebaum
