Stan, my husband, and I

Jane Asbury Hills

After graduation, I left my
cheerleading pom-poms and saxaphone home and went to Elmira College.
I graduated from Cortland State Teacher's College, now SUNY in 1960
with a BS, a husband and a newborn son. We returned to Long Island
and I began what would turn out to be a 30 year career in teaching.
I spent 5 years in Centereach, then took my sons Michael and Todd,
less one husband and headed for Martin County, Florida. There, I remarried
Stan Hills, a South Huntington native.
We began our search for the perfect world: children, a sportscar and of course,
travel, money and a home in the country club.
During my teaching career I was active in raising standards in reading on
the state level. My real satisfaction, though, came from working with children
in an area comprised mostly of migrant farmworkers and immigrants. I got
my masters degree from NOVA University at age 40, and was certified to teach
English to Speakers of other Languages. I spent 10 years as Assistant Principal
of a middle school, grades 5-8.
Glad to be out of the ratrace, I retired at 53, began playing bridge, teaching
computer usage to older citizens. Happily, we have a lovely home on a golf
course, 4 children all in the county, and 3 granddaughters all of whom we
see. I actively play bridge on the internet, do water aerobics with the other
old ladies of the club, and play Mah Jongg poorly. While my husband's health
has stopped our travel plans, we have had a wonderful life, good friends,
and happy children. Who could ask for more?
