After I graduated I planned on going to the New York Foundling
Hospital and work with the children but my brother joined the Marines and
I was needed at home.
I worked for about four years in an insurance investigating office. Through
my church I decided then to go on the a Bible School (Lutheran Bible Institute)
in Teaneck, New Jersey. I graduated as a Parish Secretary, although during
the time I interned I changed my career to Nursing. My church gave me a
scholarship and I attended a three year diploma school program (Lutheran
Medical Center in Brooklyn) and graduated, took my state tests and at the
same time matter my husband.
I graduated in September of 64,
married in January of 64 and had the first of five children in November
of 64. I was too pregnant to fit into my uniform or to travel to go to
my graduation. I got my RN certificate but did not start working until
my first born was 15 months old. I ended up specializing in Phych Nursing.
Work for both state and private institution on Long Island until 1983
I worked evenings and my husband worked days as an orderly.
I have 5 children, Cynthia, Dieter I, Erich, Kurt, and Karl. I moved to Minnesota
a few times but settled in Minnesota in 1978, opening up a Mom and Pop convenience
store and retiring from Nursing. We worked the store until 1999 and then retired
from the business.
The first time we moved to Minnesota was in 1973 but bad luck brought us
back. We had a fire and lost everything. Came back to work on Long Island
and regained our capital and found the store for sale in 1976 and moved back
in 1978. My youngest was 4 weeks old then.
My husband and I are married 38 years now, and we are still in Minnesota
but retired. I'm very proud of all my children; they turned out well. Two
married, one divorced but very happy, and two single. I have 6 grandchildren,
from 3 to 11 and they all live here in Minnesota except my daughter, who
works for New York State as a Rehabilitation Counselor and also does grief
counseling. My boys: two are policeman, one a production mgr in a plant
that gives jobs to the handicapped. My youngest, who
is 23 now, is shift manager at McDonald's and graduated from a tech school
after high school, with a carpenter's certificate. He is now working on getting
into
college for a music major. He sings, and plays drums and sax.
There is a lot more to my Auto, but you have enough to know me better.
I live an easy life now. SS is enough here in Minnesota to live on if
you watch yourself. I'm happy, active in my church, and have canaries as
pets. If some of you remember Mrs. Wyeth's English class, I raised parakeets
for an English project and we had to give a talk and demonstration. Now I'm
into Canaries, house plants, making up the church bulletin, newsletter and
what every they need for baptisms or weddings, etc. My computer is my toy.
I only wish I knew more about them. What I know I taught myself.
I don't expect to move from here. We've decided this is it. I have some physical
problems that keep me from traveling so I'm glad I'm in a tourist area where
we can fish and sightsee. I have six acres of land, enough to stroll in and
watch the wild life. We have bears, lynx, bald eagles, wolf, owl, hawks,
ravens-- and with all the lakes seagulls, loons and pelicans.
I'm writing this because I don't believe I'll be able to make the reunion.
So hi!!
to everyone who does remember me. -- Harriet (Adams) Metzig
